Between the Square and the College

The Jewell-Lightburne Historic District starts on the east side of Liberty Square and runs to William Jewell College. It’s big. The district covers 78 acres and 236 contributing buildings, and it’s a predominantly residential part of Liberty. Those houses went up between about 1852 and 1946, close to a century of building in one district, and the whole of it joined the National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 2001.

Wight & Wight designed it in the Classical Revival style, a one-story brick building completed in 1940, and it has had its own National Register listing since 1992. It isn’t a job of ours. It’s just the easiest way to picture the blocks we mean.
