How Often to Clean Tile and Grout

Look at any kitchen floor in Kansas City and the grout tells you how long it’s been since a deep clean. The tile wipes clean. Each grout joint between the tiles is porous, sits a little lower, and every mop pass drains dirty water right into it. That’s why the answer to how often to clean tile and grout has three parts: sweep or wipe every few days, scrub the grout lines monthly, and schedule a professional clean about once a year for the busy rooms.

Kitchens and entries run on a shorter cycle than a guest bath. Here’s how we’d schedule each room in a Kansas City home. Call Brooke’s Chem-Dry at (816) 841-4776 with any questions.

Why Grout Gets Dirty Faster Than the Tile

Most grout is sand and cement. Up close it looks like a sponge. Glazed tile sheds water, but grout soaks it up, along with cooking grease, soap and whatever came in on shoes.

The usual care method makes it worse over time. Mopping. A mop spreads a thin, dirty film across the floor. It runs into the joints, and when it dries the soil stays behind. After a few years the grout is a shade or two darker than the day it went in, and scrubbing only brightens the top.

How Often to Clean Tile and Grout in Each Room

Kitchen: sweep daily, mop weekly, professional clean every 12 months. Grease from the stove and drips at the sink are the hardest things on grout.

Showers and tub surrounds: rinse and squeegee after each use, scrub weekly, professional clean every 12 months. Soap film and hard water build up on shower grout faster than on the floor.

Bathroom floors: clean weekly, with a professional clean every 12 to 18 months.

Entry, mudroom and laundry: sweep every few days in wet months, with a professional clean every 6 to 12 months. This is where outdoor grit meets tile.

Living areas and hallways with tile flooring: a professional clean every 18 to 24 months.

Basements: every 24 months, plus a cleaning after any water gets in.

Sealer: The Step That Stretches the Schedule

Sealer fills the pores in grout so spills sit on top long enough to wipe up. Sealed grout stays lighter longer and can stretch a room’s professional cleaning schedule by months.

To check yours, put a few drops of water on a grout line. If it beads, the sealer is working. If the grout darkens within a minute, it’s soaking in and it’s time to reseal. Most floors need a fresh coat every few years, and showers sooner.

We offer grout sealing after a cleaning. Sealer belongs on clean grout, not over old dirt, so the two jobs go together.

Stone Tile Plays by Different Rules

Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are natural stone. The material is softer and more sensitive to acid than ceramic or porcelain, and vinegar, lemon and many bathroom sprays can etch the surface and leave dull spots.

Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for stone, never a general bathroom product, and plan on a professional clean every 12 to 18 months. Our stone tile cleaning page covers what that involves.

Kansas City Weather and Tile Floors

Our freeze season runs from roughly the end of October to early April, and ice melt tracked onto entry tile leaves a white haze in the grout joints. Sweep it up often in winter. The grit scratches the tile and the salt stays in the grout.

Spring follows with mud. May and June are the wettest months here, each averaging more than 5 inches of rain, so the back door and laundry room tile get hit next.

And in July, with dew points at KCI averaging in the mid 60s, a shower can stay damp for hours. Run the bath fan for 20 minutes after every shower and wipe the grout down.

When It’s Time for a Professional Clean

Book a cleaning in your home when the grout is clearly darker than the tile, when scrubbing lightens it for a day before it goes grey again, or when you can’t remember the last time anyone cleaned it. Newer homes aren’t exempt. Kearney and Parkville both have a median home built in 2002, and unsealed tile in a newer kitchen still darkens in the lanes between the sink, the stove and the fridge.

Our method is simple to describe. Technicians use professional equipment and a cleaner made for tile to lift soil out of every joint, rinse it away and leave the floor ready to seal. Tile and Grout Questions

How often should grout be sealed?

Every few years for most floors, and more often in showers. Use the drop test: if a few drops soak into the grout instead of beading, reseal after a cleaning.

How often should you clean shower grout?

Scrub it once a week and rinse the walls after each shower. A professional clean once a year keeps soap film and hard water from building up in the joints.

Can you clean tile and grout with vinegar?

On glazed ceramic or porcelain, occasional use is fine, but repeated use can wear down grout and sealer. Never use it on natural stone like marble or travertine, because the acid etches the surface.

How often should tile and grout be professionally cleaned?

About once a year for kitchens, showers and entries, and every 18 to 24 months for lower-traffic rooms. Sealing the grout afterward helps it stay clean longer.
