Below you will find why stone collects soil, what each common stone tends to show when it needs cleaning, which habits mark a stone floor, and how sealing fits in. For the full list of what we clean, start at our tile cleaning Kansas City page.

Stone Tile Cleaning Kansas City: Why Porous Floors Hold Soil

A glazed tile has a hard coating that keeps most dirt on top, where a mop can reach it. Natural stone has no such coating. Water, grease and tracked-in grit move into the surface and settle in the pores, and the grout lines around each tile do the same thing. That is why a stone floor can look cloudy right after mopping, then dingy again within days.

Kansas City winters make it worse. Road salt and slush come in on shoes, dry on the floor and leave a pale film, and spring mud grinds into the surface the same way. Kitchen stone picks up cooking grease year round.

The fix is not more scrubbing. What helps is cleaning with specialized cleaning solutions formulated for tile and grout.

Slate, Travertine, Marble and Granite: What Each One Shows

Every stone has its own look and its own weak spots. These are general patterns, not a promise about your floor.

  • Slate: a layered, uneven surface that traps grit and shows soil along the low spots and edges.
  • Travertine: natural holes and pits, where dirt collects and darkens over time.
  • Marble: a polished face where dull spots and water rings are easy to see.
  • Granite: a speckled surface where a film from mop water and dark grout lines are easy to see.

If you are not sure what you have, that is fine. Describe the color, the finish and where the floor is, and we will go from there.

What Can Mark Natural Stone

A few general points apply to natural stone floors.

  • Acids such as vinegar and lemon can etch some natural stone, and etching shows up as dull patches.
  • Abrasive powders and stiff wire brushes can scratch the face of stone.
  • Wipe up wine, coffee, oil and other spills quickly, before they soak into the pores.
  • Put mats at the doors to catch grit and salt before they reach the stone.

Cleaning removes soil. It does not change a surface that is already etched, scratched or cracked.

Grout Lines Between Stone Tiles

On a stone floor the grout often looks worse than the stone. Grout is cement-based and porous, so it soaks up dirty water and grease the same way the stone does, then turns dark in a pattern that follows the layout of the tiles.

Brooke’s Chem-Dry uses specialized cleaning solutions formulated for tile and grout on both the stone and the grout lines. If the grout is your biggest complaint, our tile and grout cleaning Kansas City page covers it in more detail.

Sealing for Natural Stone and Grout

Brooke’s Chem-Dry offers tile and grout sealing. A sealer slows how fast liquid soaks into porous stone and grout, which gives you more time to wipe a spill before it sets. It does not make stone immune to stains or acids, and it wears down with traffic and cleaning.

Sealing is optional. If you want it, ask when you request your free quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stone Tile Cleaning

Can I clean my stone tile with vinegar or lemon?

Acids such as vinegar and lemon can etch some natural stone, and etching leaves dull patches.

Why does my stone floor look dull right after I mop?

Often it is a thin film of mop water, cleaner and dissolved dirt drying on a porous surface. Dullness can also be etching, which is a change to the stone itself and not something a cleaning removes. Describe what you see when you call and we can talk it through.

Does natural stone tile need to be sealed?

Stone and grout are both porous, and a sealer slows how quickly liquid soaks in. Brooke’s Chem-Dry offers tile and grout sealing, and it is optional. Ask about it when you request your free quote.

What process do you use to clean stone tile and grout?

We use specialized cleaning solutions formulated for tile and grout. Tell us the type of stone and whether it has been sealed when you call, so we know what we are looking at.

Can cleaning fix etched, scratched or chipped stone?

No. Cleaning removes soil, and etching, scratches and chips are changes to the surface itself. If you are not sure whether your floor is dirty or damaged, call (816) 841-4776 and describe it.

How do I get a quote for stone tile cleaning?

Call (816) 841-4776. The quote is free and comes back in under 2 hours. Have the rooms, the stone type if you know it, and whether the floor is sealed ready.
