Steam cleaning (hot water extraction) works by injecting water into the carpet under pressure and extracting it. The carpet gets saturated. Even with a powerful extraction, a significant amount of water remains in the fiber, the backing, and especially in the padding underneath.
That water has to evaporate, and it does so from the inside out. Improving airflow with fans and open windows speeds the process, but it still takes time. In a well-ventilated room on a dry day, steam-cleaned carpets can dry in 6–12 hours. In a basement, during humid summer weather, or in a room with poor airflow, the same carpet might stay damp for 24 hours or longer.
